The business problem
The team needed a clearly defined business problem and a controlled project foundation before any detailed requirements or solution design work could responsibly begin.
Objective
Produce the core project-foundation deliverables, identify stakeholders, separate facts from assumptions and establish a disciplined approach to elicitation and requirements.
Discovery
- Review of the documents already available to the team.
- Identification of what was known, what was assumed and what was missing.
- Preparation of stakeholder questions and validation points.
- Review of assumptions, constraints and early risks.
Analysis
- Business problem analysis and scope definition.
- Stakeholder analysis and requirement ownership.
- Information-gap assessment.
- Risk identification and success-measure definition.
Outcome
Roles, responsibilities and formal project documentation are established and the requirements work is under way. The project is ongoing — no final solution or measurable business result exists yet.
Business value
Reduces the risk of designing a solution around assumptions or an incomplete view of stakeholder needs.
Requirements work has to separate confirmed facts from assumptions and name the person accountable for approval.
