The business problem
Students struggle to find accommodation that is suitable, affordable and trustworthy, and have little reliable information with which to compare options.
Objective
Define the user problem, stakeholder needs, product scope and business requirements for a student-housing platform before any solution was committed to.
Discovery
- Defined the user problem separately from any proposed feature set.
- Analysed stakeholder needs across students, landlords and institutions.
- Identified the trust and safety requirements that would determine adoption.
- Documented business-model considerations and their assumptions.
Requirements work
- Set product scope and prioritised requirements.
- Wrote user requirements as user stories with acceptance criteria.
- Recorded market assumptions explicitly as assumptions to be validated.
Outcome
Concept and requirements were developed. This is a portfolio project — no product was implemented, and the market assumptions used in the exercise remain unvalidated.
Business value
Shows how discovery separates a genuine user problem from a preferred solution before scope and cost are committed.
