The business problem
Students struggle to find accommodation that is suitable, affordable and trustworthy, and have little reliable information with which to compare options.
Objective
I set out to define the user problem, stakeholder needs, product scope and business requirements for a student-housing platform before committing to any solution.
Discovery
- Defined the user problem separately from any proposed feature set.
- Analysed stakeholder needs across students, landlords and institutions.
- Identified the trust and safety requirements that would determine adoption.
- Documented business-model considerations and their assumptions.
Requirements work
- Set product scope and prioritised requirements.
- Wrote user requirements as user stories with acceptance criteria.
- Recorded market assumptions explicitly as assumptions to be validated.
Outcome
I developed the concept and requirements. This is a portfolio project; no product was implemented, and the market assumptions I used in the exercise remain unvalidated.
Business value
This project shows how I use discovery to separate a genuine user problem from a preferred solution before scope and cost are committed.
